Not having the financial resources to invest in an extensive custom build programme, this is (for now anyway) a one-size-fits-most product. At some point in the future (if the WheelBass sells well enough), resources so generated might then lead to an expanded range of sizes for smaller basses.

Please note - the instrument still needs to be carried when encountering steps and kerbs. To be sure it will fit appropriately, simply check the specifications page.

How it works

WheelBass can be put on and taken off easily, with minimum fuss.

Simply place the WheelBass cradle on the floor and place your instrument inside it, locate the endpin into the central hole and then draw up the bungee cords, clipping them into position with the integral plastic captive hooks.

And away you go...

The high quality wheels are 125mm in diameter, having solid, non-marking elastic rubber tyre-bands. These allow smooth progress across walkways, coping well with small ridges and some slightly rougher terrain.

The size and placement of the wheels are optimally designed so the instrument should continue to fit normally into your vehicle, and when at rest, the instrument stands upright -though keep hold of your instrument of course! You may be tempted to leave it standing upright, unattended, but remember there's always the unscheduled gust of wind, or the less-than-mindful passer-by... Always lift the bass when encountering steps and kerbs, as although the wheels can (in theory) deal with them, the bouncing shock of such manoeuvres will not be good for the bass.

The 'mudguard' cradle that holds the bass is lined with foam, so the WheelBass can be used with the instrument in it's case, or without if necessary. Because the cradle extends around most of the lower bout, it affords additional knock protection when encountering doors and door frames.

WheelBass Background

Some years back I made myself a small, two-wheeled dolly that could be attached to my bass's soft case with velcro. That worked very well, but had some issues. Being a small dolly, just big enough to fix the wheels onto, any shocks encountered in transit were delivered to a small and specific area of the instrument's lower bout rib. That necessitated a visit to the bass repairer on a couple of occasions. Also, the velcro would sometimes fail to hold, dolly and bass parting company in transit.

Passing a lorry on the motorway I had a moment of inspiration, suspecting that a lorry mudguard might just solve those issues...

Well, to cut a long story short, it did. So the WheelBass was born.

The resulting 'cradle' is lined with foam, so can be used with a bass either in or out of it's soft case. The 'cradle' extends around a significant proportion of the bass's lower bout, so if shock impacts are encountered by the wheels when going over an uneven surface, then the shock is minimised by being dispersed over a large area. Because the cradle covers most of the lower bout rib area, it also happily affords extra bump protection when encountering doorways.
